The Learning Center for Young Children's Inclement Weather and Emergency Closing Policy is linked to the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Closing Policy. In order to find out if LCYC is closed, families need to know if Montgomery County Public Schools are closed.

During winter months if the forecast is for snow, sleet or freezing rain or if there has been a storm the day before, LCYC suggests that families check each morning for public school closings and delays. During severe weather outbreaks (e.g. thunderstorms that cause power outages or hurricanes) or Emergency situations such as happened September 11, 2001, also check for public school closings. Early morning broadcasts on local radio and television stations beginning at 6:00 A.M. announce school closings e.g. WTOP Radio 103.5 FM and local TV Channels 4, 5, 7, 8 or 9. Please listen to hear whether Montgomery County Public Schools are open, closed or delayed. You may also check the MCPS web site for closures:

You may wish to sign up for e-mail or text alerts concerning MCPS closures or delays. To do so go to the following website:

CLOSURE POLICY: If Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are closed, the Learning Center for Young Children (LCYC) is closed.

TWO HOUR DELAYED OPENING POLICY: If there is a two-hour delayed opening for Montgomery County Public Schools, LCYC’s schedule is as follows:

LCYC morning classes for 2's, 3's and 4's are cancelled. Wednesday Parents Day Out and Wednesdays for 2's opens at 11:00 A.M. and all children may stay until 1:00 P.M. Extended Day classes will be held from 11:45 A.M. until 2:30 P.M.

EARLY CLOSURE - If Montgomery County Public Schools close early, LCYC will dismiss as quickly as possible and afternoon classes are cancelled.

Please note that tuition refunds will not be made for school closings due to bad weather.

DO NOTE THAT LCYC CHILDREN GO OUTSIDE IN SNOWY AND COLD WEATHER AND AFTER RAIN HAS ENDED. During cold or snowy weather, children and co-opers need to wear appropriate clothing and footgear. A hat, mittens or gloves, a coat or jacket, socks and boots are important if it is snowy or muddy. Students and adults can manage very well outside in the snow and cold or on wet ground, if dressed appropriately.

Check the zippers on jackets to make sure they are in good working condition and have zipper pulls. If a jacket has buttons, do make sure that any missing buttons are replaced and loose buttons on the jacket are repaired. Be sure that any drawstrings on jackets are very short, as long drawstrings pose a choking hazard. Label outerwear, hats, boots and mittens with your child's name. If your child is dressed appropriately, he/she will enjoy outdoor play more. Co-opers also need to dress appropriately for the weather. On a cold day, half an hour on the playground can be very uncomfortable for an adult in a light jacket or sweater with no hat, gloves or mittens.
